FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

What can I do to make sure my application is as successful as possible?

Tips for a successful mail-in application:
1. Make sure your name is on your CD, both the cover and the CD itself.
2. Include a list of track titles with the CD, so the judges can move quickly between your submitted arias listed on your application form.
3. Make sure your résumé is only one page.
4. Include your name and contact information on your résumé.
5. Include your name somewhere on your résumé. If your name is not printed on the front of your headshot, handwriting your name on the back is fine. Or a label with your name printed on it. Some people staple their résumés to the back of their headshots.

Tips for a successful online application:
1. Make sure your website is very easy to navigate. Don't make the judges search for your materials!
2. Use the "Special Instructions" field on the online application form to inform the judges of any tips they might need to find your audio clips or résumé if these things are not easily accessible. For example, "My résumé is found on my 'Materials' page - the link to the 'Materials' page is on the left-hand side of the screen.'
3. Do not post partial arias on your website for this competition. Complete clips of your arias are required.

How do I recertify once I become a Certified Singer?

Certified Singers have the option to renew their certification at the next year's AudComps. If he or she wants the opportunity to sing in front of the attending companies at the upcoming AudComps, he or she must simply recertify with a judging panel at the next AudComps and will have time set aside to sing for the directors. The AudComps coordinator will contact all of last year's Certified Singers a month to two months before the AudComps to ask intentions to recertify. This must be arranged at that time so that we can set aside enough time with the company directors.

If I became a Certified Singer at a previous AudComps, can I compete again?

All Certified Singers (with one exception, see below) can compete for the cash prizes and the contract prizes in upcoming AudComps, but to do so, he or she must enter the AudComps again. The pre-screening will be waived for past Certified Singers and the singer can enter the semi-final round of the AudComps. If a previously Certified Singer enters the AudComps to compete again and does not advance to the Finals, his or her Certification is not renewed.

The first-place winner of each division may not enter the AudComps again in that division. For example, the first-place winner of the Young Artist Division may not enter the Young Artist Division again, but can select another division in which to enter. The first-place winner of the Professional Division is the only singer who cannot enter the AudComps again.

Is there an age limit?

There is no age limit for any division, but CS recommends that you apply in the division to which you are most qualified. Applying in a division that you are not yet qualified for will only hinder your chances of succeeding at the AudComps.

Do I get comments from the judges?

All participants receive written comments from each round of the AudComps. The comments are specifically geared towards giving you an idea of how you come across to a judging panel in an audition setting.

Do the arias I submit for pre-screening have to be included on my list of five arias in the semi-final and final rounds?

No, your list of arias can be different than what is on your recording if you wish. Your list of arias in the semi-final round can be different than your list of five for the final round, if you wish to change something.

Do I select what I sing at the semi-final or final round?

In both the semi-final and final rounds, you will pick your first aria and the judges will select a second or part of a second to round out your ten-minute time slot.

Where and when will the results from each round be posted?

The pre-screening results will be e-mailed to each applicant. The semi-final round results will be posted at the Convention, posted online, as well as on a message at a phone extension in the CS offices. The final round results will all be announced at the Convention closing session on Saturday morning, as well as online.

Can my manager/teacher/parent/friend sit in on my audition?

The semi-final rounds are closed to the public, but all final rounds are open to the public.

Can I still attend the Professional Series classes and compete in the AudComps?

Yes. Professional Series attendees who are Semi-Finalists in the AudComps will get first pick of audition time slots to ensure their ability to maximize their time at the entire Convention.

Can I submit oratorio or art songs in the pre-screening or in the live rounds?

This is an operatic competition. Arias from operas or operetta only please.
