Division Profiles

These division profiles are guidelines to help you figure out which category you belong in – they are just suggestions. No one will fit perfectly in one category, but you might identify more with one category than another.

There are three Artist Divisions: Professional, Emerging Professional and Young Artist. Singers select their artist division, based on where they are in their careers in comparison with the Division Profiles and Contract Prizes being offered.

Professional Artist Division Suggested Profile:

  • These singers have sung or have upcoming contracts with A, B, C, or D level houses (lead, comprimario, or cover).
  • Many of these singers have management, are on the verge of getting management or successfully self-manage.
  • All, or much of these singers’ income comes from singing-related activities.

Emerging Professional Artist Division Suggested Profile:

  • These singers might have recently finished or are about to finish a young artist program, or an advanced college degree in vocal performance.
  • These singers have sung or have upcoming contracts with C or D level houses, (lead, comprimario, or cover).
  • These singers might have management.
  • Some of these singers’ income comes from singing engagements.
  • Some of these singers might have another job to supplement their income.
  • These singers probably do not have a lot of experience or roles listed on their résumés. Roles might be prepared but perhaps have not been performed.

Young Artist/University Division Suggested Profile:

  • These singers are currently enrolled in a university undergrad or grad program or are looking for a young artist program or summer program.
  • These singers most likely do not have management.
  • These singers are most likely around 18-30 years of age (no proof of age required).

Classical Singer reserves the right to reassign singers to a different division if the prescreening or semi-final judges feel the singer is significantly out of place. Classical Singer also reserves the right to combine two divisions in the case of a small number of qualified singers advancing to the semi-finals.
