When I was a student in the sixth grade, I had a music teacher who introduced us to opera through the use of audio and visual recordings. The very first video production of an opera we saw was of the Death of Scarpia in Tosca by Puccini starring Placido Domingo. We also saw a production of Madame Butterfly starring Domingo, following that, our class was taken to the 1989 Dallas Opera production of the same opera. It was a fabulous production and I remember well being so moved as I watched Butterfly fall to the ground, knocking over the divider screen, and blowing flower petals into the audience. I understood everything, and I said to myself, "I want to do that! I want to be just like those people on that stage with all those costumes! I want to learn how to sing classical music just like them!" I rushed home to tell my Mom what I had seen and how I wanted to do the same and she helped me begin my journey. The journey continues.... |
