The Final Rounds
at the CS Music Convention

All CS Music Convention and Competition events will be held at the Sheraton Chicago Grand, May 25-28. CONFIRM YOUR PARTICIPATION via your CS Music account at csmusic.net/applications or call 877-515-9800.

Here's a list of the Convention events for you:

Classical Divisions

  • Chicago Regional First Round
    Thursday, May 25
    • All Divisions
    • Format
      • Come prepared with 3 contrasting selections, one in a language other than English..
      • Bring a word-processed repertoire list with the singer's name and the titles and composers of the selections for the judges.
      • Original music is not required, but make sure copied music is in a three-ringed binder (no loose copies of music).
      • You may bring your own accompanist or use the one provided, but there will be no time to practice with the accompanist beforehand.
      • Practice rooms will be available, but these rooms do not include pianos.
      • You will have approximately 8 minutes of performance time:
        • One selection of your choice
        • A portion of a second selection of the Judge's choice
    • Winners and Other Details
      • Semiformal daytime audition attire is appropriate.
      • At least the top half of participants of each division will be advanced to the Second Round.
      • Winners will be announced online and a list will be posted near the Convention Registration Desk by 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 25.
      • Second Round times will be assigned and emailed out to singers individually.
      • This is an open competition; parents, family, and others may sit in on the competition, space permitting.

  • Second Round
    Thursday, May 25 - Saturday, May 28
    • Format
      • Only 2 selections are required for the Second Round, though singers may come prepared with 3.
      • Bring a word-processed repertoire list with the singer's name and the titles and composers of the selections for the judges.
      • Original music is not required, but make sure copied music is in a three-ringed binder (no loose copies of music).
      • You may bring your own accompanist or use the one provided, but there will be no time to practice with the accompanist beforehand.
      • Practice rooms will be available, but these rooms do not include pianos.
      • You may use the same selections as you did in the First Round.
      • You will have approximately 7 minutes of performance time:
        • One selection of your choice
        • If time remains, a portion of the second selection
    • Other Details
      • Semiformal daytime audition attire is appropriate.
      • Depending on the size of the division, approximately 14-40 singers will advance to the Semifinal Round from each division.
      • This is an open competition; parents, family, and others may sit in on the competition, space permitting.

  • Semifinal Round
    Sunday, May 28, 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
    • All divisions.
    • Semiformal daytime audition attire is appropriate.
    • You will perform one song selection of your choice in its entirety.
    • The top 6-10 singers in each division will advance from this round to the Final Round in the afternoon.
    • Winners will be notified via email and a list will be posted near the Convention Registration Desk as soon as possible after the round.
    • This is an open competition; parents, family, and others may sit in on the competition, space permitting.

  • Final Round
    Sunday, May 28, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
    • All divisions.
    • Formal attire is appropriate for the Final Round, though not required.
    • You will perform one song selection of your choice in its entirety—it is recommended to use the same selection from the Semifinal Round.
    • The top 3 singers from each division—in no particular order— will advance to sing in the Grand Finale Concert and Awards Round.
  • Grand Finale Concert and Awards Round
    Sunday, May 28, 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.
    • The top 3 singers from each division will perform one selection of choice at the Finale Concert.
    • Judges will then make their final selection for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place of each division.
    • Scholarships and cash prizes will be awarded during the concert for both Classical and Musical Theatre categories in all divisions.
    • Formal attire is appropriate.

Musical Theatre Divisions

  • Second Round
    Thursday, May 25 - Saturday, May 27
    • Format

      • Depending on the size of the division, approximately 14-30 singers will advance to the Semifinal Round from each division.
      • This is an open competition; parents, family, and others may sit in on the competition, space permitting.

  • Semifinal Round
    Saturday, May 27, 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.
    • All divisions.
    • Semiformal daytime audition attire is appropriate.
    • You will perform one song selection of your choice in its entirety.
    • The top 10 singers from each division will advance from this round to the Final Round.
    • Winners will be notified via email and a list will be posted near the Convention Registration Desk by 10 p.m.
    • This is an open competition; parents, family, and others may sit in on the competition, space permitting.
  • Final Round
    Sunday, May 28, 10 a.m. - Noon
    • All divisions.
    • Formal attire is appropriate for the Final Round, though not required.
    • You will perform one song selection of your choice in its entirety—it is recommended to use the same selection from the Semifinal Round.
    • The top 3 singers from each division—in no particular order—will advance to sing in the Grand Finale Concert and Awards Round.
  • Grand Finale Concert and Awards Round
    Sunday, May 28, 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.
    • The top 3 singers from each division will perform one selection of choice at the Finale Concert.
    • Judges will then make their final selection for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place of each division.
    • Scholarships and cash prizes will be awarded during the concert for both Classical and Musical Theatre categories in all divisions.
    • Formal attire is appropriate.

  • The Expo
    Recruiting Fair
    May 26-28
    (Free for all Competition participants; no additional registration necessary.)

    • Meet with undergraduate and graduate representatives from premier vocal programs as you find the right school for you. Faculty and admission officers from more than 70 of the top schools in the nation will be at the Expo to help you find the school that fits you the best.

      • Eastman, New England Conservatory, Boston, UCLA, San Francisco, BYU, Michigan, and dozens of others.

    • Exhibitor Area Open:
      • Friday, May 26; 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
      • Saturday, May 27; 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
      • Sunday, May 28; 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
        • Note: Some schools may come for just one day, so check the exhibitor area both days to make sure you visit the school of your choice.

  • Convention Classes
    High School, University, and Emerging Professional Classes

    May 25-28
    (Free for all Competition participants; no additional registration necessary.)

    • Top faculty members from the participating Expo schools and Exhibitors will present more than 50 masterclasses and workshops:

    • No pre-registration necessary for the classes; attend as many as you want.
      • Classes are free to attend for competition participants.
      • Students interested in singing in a masterclass should sign up with a specific school or program in the exhibiting area on the day of their class, or at the Convention Registration desk if the class is on Thursday. Volunteers will also be selected in classes as time permits.
      • Please limit singing in 1 class per day to allow others the opportunity to sing.

    • Topics include Successful Auditioning, Nailing Your College Audition, Choosing the Right Repertoire, Healthy Technique, Mental, Musical, and Vocal Preparation, How to Choose the Right School, and more.

  • Audition Feedback Experience

    Work on your audition and get immediate verbal feedback at the AFE.

    Since 2009 singers boast that the AFE was the highlight of their Convention weekend. They insist that it changed how they audition and that it changed their career. Sign up and let it change the way you audition and let it change your career.

    Sign up for a 15-minutes audition for just $95. The Audition Feedback Experience participantion is by registration only. Sign up for as many sessions as you'd like. Each one is $95. An accompanist is provided, but you can bring your own if you'd prefer. All Convention Class Pass holders can attend the session, but only those that register to sing can get feedback.
